All 2008 US Nobel Laureates in Science Endorse Obama!

In yesterday’s YouTube video posted by Marty Chalfie, he referred to the fact that all three science Laureates for 2008 had endorsed Obama. Now it is official. From the Obama campaign; “With one voice, 65 of the nation’s greatest minds, the largest number of Nobel Laureates to ever endorse a political candidate for office, have encouraged the American public to vote Obama on November 4th.”

Martin Chalfie, and Roger Tsien won the prize in Chemistry with for their pioneering work on the use of green fluorescent protein. Yoichiro Nambu won the prize in Physics for his mathematical model, which unified the smallest building blocks of all matter and three of nature’s four forces in one single theory.

Marty Chalfie’s YouTube video is HERE.
The updated Nobel letter of endorsement is HERE.

  9. Larian LeQuella Says:

Well, considering the average intellect I am seeing in this once great nation, this may not have a lot of meaning to the dullards… I too support Obama for his much more rational pro-science stance, but in this case the ignorance of the masses may frighten them of rational and intelligent people supporting Obama.

Did each scientist outline reasons for their support? (Sorry, have not been able to view the documents of videos here at work)?

  12. Perfesser Dean Says:

All Nobel Laureates want their science to be funded. Even if Obama lies through his teeth about everything and promises the sun/moon and stars, for some incredible reason everyone believes him and is happy to hear that Obama “will have enough money to make EVERYONE SO HAPPY”. After Obama is elected and the shit hits the fan, there’ll be such repercussions (e.g. Carter in 1980) that the country once again will move FAR to the Right in 2012. Unless we become socialists and stop having elections.

  13. Lisa Says:

    @Richard Li

The most recent Nobel for Economics went to Paul Klugman. He supports Obama.

  14. Michael Stebbins Says:

Perfesser Dean: I understand your cynicism, but it seems founded in a rather narrow view. Care to explain what about the McCain plan these laureates should have considered when making their decision? I find his policy positions woefully lacking in detail, but maybe 65 Nobel Laureates are wrong on this. It could happen.

  15. Bill Eccles Says:

I’m intrigued that the Nobel Laureates felt the need to use their celebrity to endorse a political candidate. That puts them into the same category as Tom Cruise and Madonna.

Just because these people are each smart about one thing, celebrated though they may be, doesn’t mean that their celebrity makes them any wiser than anybody else.

  16. Moe Hong Says:

Perfesser Dean, since when do socialists not have elections? I think maybe you fell asleep in school.

Most of the socialist countries in the world are direct democracies, and far more democratic than the US!

I don’t think they felt they needed their “celebrity” to do something. One candidate is pro-science - that is, he believes that observable data from experiments can and should support legislation. The other, time and time again, has shown himself to be anti-science, and has voted the party line in an administration that has come right out and said that “science is hogwash,” and that “chemistry, for example, is often untrue.”

Who do you support - the rational person or the anti-rational?

  17. Caitlin Burke Says:

“I’m an Obama supporter, but it disturbs me greatly that none of the Nobel Laureates in Economics are listed.”

From the Nobel website: “Every year since 1901 the Nobel Prize has been awarded for achievements in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and for peace.” [ http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/ ]

There is no Nobel for Economics. The Krugman award was an Alfred Nobel Memorial prize by a different group.

  18. Ana Says:

Personally, this takes my breath away.

65 people of any kind, and then intense linear thinkers like these coming together impresses me.

We are watching amazing communications and creative civic engagement across all types of people on all sides of the issues and crises at this moment in time.

I say that as I watch my conservative young second cousins in New Jersey (whom I know primarily through Facebook) writing to my theatre friends in Detroit and the history professor at Wayne State as they engage each other albeit not always dispassionately.

I think we need to learn to be kind to each other as we turn the corner from the old world.

I choose to ignore the squelchers. And hope that we have the wisdom to take these next steps as a nation lovingly together.

@ Richard Li: the economics prize may not be listed but I’ll eat my hat if Krugman votes for McCain.

  21. Iqbal Chaudhry Says:

John McCain with his age and 26 years in the Senate has done the best he could but the country has been going down hill during the his association with Bush,s political and economic ploicies. John has obviously reached a plateau and there is no probability he can effectively the challenges and opportunities presented by the 21st century. That’s why he and his hocky mom running mate with her major experience as the mayor of a small town of 8000 some population and her major accomplishment as a runner up beauty peagent, are both focussing on slogan mongering and no substance and hoping to get away with it. They are insulting the intelligence of their audience.

John is absolutely no match with Obama who is one of the brightest scholars hailing from the most prestigious Law School (Harvard University) in the country. Obama who is undoubtedly a quick learner does not lack experience either. Look at his 20 years plus professional life in various capacities e.g. Us Senator, State Senator, Professor of law, practicing lawyer, Member of high level intellectual Boards and surely as selfless American Community Organizer in his early life.
